The 1st MTP joint is the big toe joint of the foot.
The first metatarsal joint is one of the key joints for a functioning gait pattern (Chinn and Hertel, 2010).
It is commonly injured when moved to the extremes of its range with force for example kicking an object stubbing the toe.
Management of this condition involves following the PRICE regime and management of aberrant biomechanics, taping and or orthotic management and footwear advice.
